Who needs Milk-bones?
As part of the New Year, many of us are trying to eat healthier and get our 5 servings of fruits and vegetables in per day. With all the fresh produce around, why not share some with your best furry friend? Apples, carrots, bell peppers, etc. provide lots of vitamins without packing on the pounds. However, treats should not make up more than about 10% of the calories in your dog's diet. For example, if you have a 20 pound dog that eats about 500 calories per day, they should only get about 50 calories per day from treats. Feeding too many treats can lead to deficiencies in their diet. While fruits and vegetables make wonderful, healthy snacks for dogs, some can be dangerous. These include grapes/raisins, onions, and garlic. Lean meats and cheeses can also be healthy treats in moderation. A list of human foods that can be safely used as treats, as well as calorie contents, can be found below.
